How much is a transfer from Sofia to Skopje?
200 € by sedan, 260 € by minivan and 320 € by minibus, one way, for the whole vehicle. These are the prices in our Sofia and Sofia Airport price lists. Whether you travel alone or with three friends, the sedan costs the same; split between four people it is 50 € each.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Price, one way |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | up to 4 | 200 € |
| Minivan | up to 6 | 260 € |
| Minibus | up to 8 | 320 € |
From Sofia Airport the price is the same. If you fly into Sofia and continue to Skopje by road, the driver meets you at arrivals and you are on your way to North Macedonia without changing vehicles. Executive cars (Mercedes E-Class or S-Class) and buses for more than 8 people are on request, and so is the trip back from Skopje to Sofia: it has its own price, which we confirm when you book.
How long does the drive from Sofia to Skopje take?
About 4 hours for roughly 250 km. That is slower than the distance suggests, because most of this route is not motorway. From Sofia the driver heads west past Pernik and then south-west through Radomir and Kyustendil to the border at Gyueshevo. On the Macedonian side the road comes down from the Deve Bair pass through Kriva Palanka and Kumanovo, and only the last part before Skopje is fast.
The road crosses hills on both sides of the border and has many curves around the pass. If anyone in your group gets car sick, tell the driver: he will take it calmly and stop when needed. A coffee break is normal on the way. If you want to see something on the route, for example the spa town of Kyustendil, mention it when you book, and we confirm the extra time and price in advance.
Which border crossing is on the way to Skopje?
Gyueshevo on the Bulgarian side and Deve Bair on the Macedonian side. It is the direct crossing between Sofia and Skopje and lies high in the hills, at the top of the Deve Bair pass.
This is an external border of the EU and the Schengen area, so there is a full passport check on both sides: Bulgarian officers check you on the way out and Macedonian officers on the way in. Since the EU Entry/Exit System started, travellers who are not EU citizens are registered with fingerprints and a photo when they leave or enter the Schengen area, which can make the check a little longer the first time. The crossing is usually not crowded, but waiting times vary with the season, the time of day and the holidays.
What documents do I need for North Macedonia?
A valid passport, or a valid national ID card if your citizenship allows it. North Macedonia is not in the EU, so the rules depend on the country that issued your document. Citizens of many European countries can enter with an ID card; others need a passport, and some nationalities also need a visa.
Please check the current rules for your own citizenship before you travel, and make sure children have their own documents. Keep everything in your hand luggage, not in the boot. Our article What documents do you need for border transfers covers the general points.
Where will the driver pick me up?
At your address anywhere in Sofia, or in the arrivals hall at Sofia Airport. At an address the driver arrives on time and waits up to 15 minutes. At the airport we track your flight; if it is late, waiting is free and has no time limit. Our Sofia Airport arrivals guide explains the terminals and where you meet the driver.
In Skopje we take you to your hotel, a friend’s flat, an office or any other address in the city. For Skopje Airport, Ohrid, Tetovo or other towns, send us the place and we tell you the price before you book.
Children, luggage and larger groups
- Free child seats: infant carrier, child seat and booster, at no extra cost. Just tell us how many you need.
- Room for your bags: let us know about big suitcases, a pushchair, sports equipment or boxes, and we choose the right vehicle.
- Groups and teams: up to 8 people fit in one minibus. For a larger group, a team or a wedding party, we arrange a bus or several vehicles that travel together.
Car with a driver or the bus to Skopje
Coaches run between Sofia and Skopje, and if you travel alone with a backpack they cost less than any car. They go from bus station to bus station on a fixed timetable, so you still need to get to the station in Sofia and from the station in Skopje to your address. With a car and driver you leave from your door or from the airport at the hour you choose, and there is nobody else to wait for at the border. For a family or for three or four colleagues, the price per person is often close to the bus and the trip is a lot easier.
