How much does a transfer from Sofia to Bucharest cost?
From 300 € for the whole car, not per person. The prices below come from our Sofia and Sofia Airport price lists. We added Ruse as a second column, because some travellers only need to reach the Danube and continue on the Romanian side with their own plans. The fixed price covers the driver and the whole trip to your address, whatever the traffic, the hour or the luggage.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Bucharest | Ruse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan | up to 4 | 300 € | 200 € |
| Minivan | up to 6 | 360 € | 270 € |
| Minibus | up to 8 | 435 € | 300 € |
From Sofia Airport the price is the same: 300, 360 or 435 € to Bucharest. That is handy if you land in Sofia and your meeting, hotel or family is in Romania. Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni), a Mercedes E-Class or S-Class and coaches for groups larger than 8 are on request; send us the details and we confirm a fixed price before you book. The way back from Bucharest to Sofia has its own price, which we tell you when you order.
How long is the drive from Sofia to Bucharest?
About 5 hours 30 minutes without stops, for roughly 385 km. Ruse, on the Bulgarian bank of the Danube, is about 310 km and 4 hours from Sofia; from there it is a short run over the bridge to Giurgiu and on to Bucharest.
From Sofia the driver heads north-east through the Balkan Mountains on the Hemus motorway, then across the flat Danube plain to Ruse. After the Danube Bridge the road on the Romanian side runs straight north to the capital. A coffee or toilet break is normal on a trip of this length; just tell the driver when you need one.
Which border crossing do we use?
The Danube Bridge between Ruse in Bulgaria and Giurgiu in Romania. It is the most direct road crossing between Sofia and Bucharest, and the one our drivers use on this route.
Bulgaria and Romania both became full Schengen members on 1 January 2025, so there is normally no routine passport control on the bridge any more. Police can still make spot checks, and temporary controls can return at short notice. Traffic on the bridge is heavy with trucks at times and roadworks happen, so we cannot promise a fixed waiting time. If you have a flight or an appointment in Bucharest, tell us and we plan the departure with a margin.
What documents do I need to travel to Romania?
A valid passport or, for citizens of the EU and the Schengen countries, a valid national ID card. Romania is in the EU and in Schengen, like Bulgaria. Travellers from other countries need a passport and must follow the Schengen rules for their nationality. Children need their own travel document too.
Keep your documents with you in the car rather than in the suitcase, in case of a spot check. Rules can change, so look at the official requirements for your citizenship before the trip. Our guide What documents do you need for border transfers covers the general points.
Where does the driver pick me up and drop me off?
At any address in Sofia or at Sofia Airport, and at the door of your hotel, office or home in Bucharest. In Sofia the driver arrives on time and waits up to 15 minutes at the address. At Sofia Airport he meets you in the arrivals hall; we follow your flight, and if it is delayed, waiting is free and has no time limit.
The same car can also stop in Ruse or Giurgiu if someone in your group gets out on the way. Tell us every address when you book, so the price and the route are clear from the start.
A stop in Ruse on the way
Ruse is the natural halfway point. The old centre near the river has Belle Époque buildings, cafés and a long promenade along the Danube, and a short lunch break there makes the trip much easier for children. If you want a longer stop, or a detour to the rock churches of Ivanovo near Ruse, mention it when you book and we agree the extra time and price in advance.
Child seats, luggage and groups
- Child seats at no extra cost: infant carrier, child seat and booster. Tell us the number of children.
- Luggage: a sedan takes 4 passengers, but for four adults with large suitcases the minivan is the better choice. Tell us about bikes, sports bags or a pushchair.
- Groups: up to 8 people in one minibus. For bigger groups, such as a company team or a wedding party, we send a larger bus or several cars.
Private transfer, coach or train
Coaches run between Sofia and Bucharest, and there is a rail connection through Ruse. For one traveller with a backpack they cost less. They also run on a fixed timetable, stop on the way and finish at a station, so you still need a taxi at the end. A private transfer leaves when you choose, from your door or the airport, and stops at your address in Bucharest. For a family or three or four colleagues, the price per person comes close to public transport, and the day is shorter and calmer.
