Sofia Airport to Smolyan: from the runway into the Rhodopes
Smolyan is the main town of the Central Rhodopes, a long town stretched along a narrow valley high in the mountains. From Sofia Airport the drive is about 245 km and takes roughly 3 h 45 min without stops. Many people book it after an evening flight, when the last buses to the mountains have already left.

The first part of the trip is easy: the Sofia ring road and then the Trakia motorway east to Plovdiv. From there the road turns south to Asenovgrad and enters the gorge of the Chaya river, past Bachkovo Monastery. This is where the mountain driving starts, with many bends as the road climbs through Narechen and Chepelare and on past Pamporovo before it drops down to Smolyan.

From December to March the mountain section is a different road. Snow and ice are normal around Pamporovo, and on weekends the ski traffic slows things down.
