Plovdiv Airport to Smolyan: from the plain straight into the mountains
Plovdiv Airport has one advantage for anyone going to Smolyan: you do not have to cross Plovdiv at all. The airport is at Krumovo, south-east of the city, and the road from there runs south towards Asenovgrad and the mountains. About 100 km later, after roughly 2 h 15 min of driving, you are in the heart of the Central Rhodopes.
The first few kilometres are flat and quick. Asenovgrad marks the change: behind the town the road enters the narrow gorge of the Chaya river and starts to climb. From there to Smolyan it is mountain driving, with tight curves, short straight sections and villages on the slopes. It is not a road to rush, and the driving time on the page already allows for that.
Smolyan is not one compact town. In 1960 the old villages of Ustovo, Raykovo and Ezerovo were joined into one long municipality along the valley, and the town still stretches for kilometres. In winter many of the people who land at Plovdiv are skiers. Pamporovo lies on the road to Smolyan, so if you are staying at a hotel in the resort instead, it is the same trip and a little shorter.
