Svilengrad sits in the far south-east of Bulgaria, on the Maritsa river, only a short drive from both the Greek and the Turkish border. Its name means "silk town", from the old word svila for silk, because silk was once made here. Most visitors today know it for the Mustafa Pasha bridge, a stone bridge over the Maritsa built in the 16th century that still stands.

From Varna Airport it is a long diagonal across the country: about 310 km and roughly 4 h 35 min of driving. The road leaves the coast, crosses the low hills where the Balkan range runs out and then runs south-west through the Thracian plain until it reaches the Maritsa valley. There is no high pass on the way, so the drive is steady in every season, though fog in the plain on autumn mornings can slow things down.
