Varna Airport to Ravda: when you fly into Varna but stay near Nessebar

Burgas Airport is much closer to Ravda, and nobody would pretend otherwise. But flights do not always work out that way. Sometimes the only good connection, or the only fare that makes sense for a family, lands in Varna. Then the question is how to get 105 km down the coast with luggage, and the answer is about 2 h in a car.

Ravda is a seaside village just south of Nessebar, on the other side of the bay from the old town. For years it was known for children's and student holiday camps, and it still has a young, busy feel in summer, with hotels and guest houses next to a long beach. It is also a quieter base for people who want to be close to Nessebar and Sunny Beach without staying in them.

From Varna Airport the car goes south through the Varna area and takes the coast road across the last low ridges of the Balkan range, through Byala and Obzor. The road comes down to Sveti Vlas and Sunny Beach, where in high season traffic can be slow, and continues past the turn for the old town of Nessebar to Ravda.

There are good places for a short break on the way. The road runs high above the sea for part of the route, and Obzor, roughly half-way, has cafés near the main road. If you are travelling with small children, tell us their ages; child seats come at no cost.

Because the trip is not short, think about timing. A late evening landing in Varna means arriving in Ravda close to midnight; tell your hotel so someone is at reception. For the return, plan the pickup so you are at Varna Airport two hours before departure, and add some time in July and August for the traffic around Sunny Beach.
