Leaving Sofia, the road climbs west to the border at Kalotina. The Serbian side of the crossing is called Gradina. Serbia is not in the EU or in Schengen, so here there is a real passport and customs check, and on summer weekends and around holidays the queue can be long. Check before you travel which document your nationality needs to enter Serbia.
After the border the motorway runs down the Nišava valley past Pirot to Niš, where it meets the main motorway north. From Niš it is a straight, fast run of a little over two hours to Belgrade. If you are tired by then, Niš is a good place for a second stop and a proper meal.
