Devin is a small town deep in the western Rhodopes, on the Devinska river, surrounded by forest and steep rocky slopes. It is a quiet place, and people come here to rest in one of the hotels, to walk in the mountains and to visit the caves and gorges nearby. From Sofia the trip is about 220 km and takes roughly 3 h 15 min without stops.
The first part is the fast one. The driver takes the Trakia motorway east from Sofia and leaves it before Plovdiv, in the area of Krichim. From there the road enters the Vacha gorge and the real mountain drive begins: a narrow valley with rock walls on both sides, a long reservoir and many bends as the road climbs south towards Devin. This section is beautiful but slow, so the driver does not rush it. If anyone in the car gets travel sick, tell us in advance and we will plan a break before the gorge.
In winter the Rhodopes get snow, and the road to Devin can be icy, especially in the morning. Our cars are on winter tyres in season, and the driver leaves earlier if the forecast is bad. In summer the main thing is the traffic on Friday afternoons, when many people from Sofia and Plovdiv head to the mountains for the weekend.
