Sofia to Kulata: down the Struma valley to the Greek border
Kulata is the busiest crossing between Bulgaria and Greece, at the southern end of the Struma valley. On the other side the checkpoint is called Promachonas, and from there the road continues towards Thessaloniki. Some people book this trip to meet a car or a relative from Greece at the border, others because they have a transfer arranged on the Greek side and simply need to get there from Sofia on time.
It is about 190 km and roughly 2 h 30 min of driving without stops. The road leaves Sofia to the south-west on the Struma motorway, passes Pernik and Dupnitsa and goes on to Blagoevgrad. South of Simitli the valley closes in and the road enters the Kresna gorge, a narrow, winding section along the river where traffic moves more slowly, especially behind lorries. After the gorge the valley opens again, the road passes Sandanski and Petrich, and the border is a few kilometres further on.
Since 2025 Bulgaria is fully in Schengen, like Greece, so there is no routine passport control at Kulata. Still have your passport or ID card with you, as police can stop cars for checks on both sides.
This is a crossing used by many lorries, and the queues of trucks before the border can be long. Cars use their own lanes, but we still plan the departure with some margin if you have to meet someone at a fixed hour. Tell us that time when you book.
On the way there are good reasons to stop. Near Sandanski a side road leads to Melnik, a small town famous for its wine and the sand pyramids around it, and to Rozhen Monastery above it. If you want to see them, the stop can be planned in advance.
The fare is for the car and is fixed before the trip: a sedan for up to 4 passengers from 140 €, a minivan from 180 €, a minibus for 8 from 200 €. VIP is on request. You pay the driver, with no prepayment.
We work 24/7 and answer right away.
