Plovdiv to Kavarna: to the cliffs of the northern coast
The coast around Kavarna looks nothing like the long sandy beaches further south. Here the steppe of Dobrudzha ends in reddish limestone cliffs above the sea, and at Cape Kaliakra a narrow headland runs out for about two kilometres, with the ruins of a medieval fortress at its tip.
From Plovdiv this is one of the longer drives to the sea: about 440 km and roughly 5 h 30 min without stops. The Trakia motorway carries you east for the first stretch. After that the driver either follows the coast north through Varna or takes the inland road over the eastern end of the Balkan range, depending on traffic. Past Varna the road climbs onto the plateau, and the last stretch runs through open fields of wheat and sunflowers.
Golf brings a lot of people to this corner. Three courses sit on the cliffs between Balchik and Kaliakra, and golfers from Plovdiv often come for a long weekend. Golf bags are long and awkward in a sedan with suitcases, so if two or more of you bring clubs, the minivan is the better choice.
Kavarna itself is a small town with a harbour below the cliffs. Mussels are farmed in the sea near Kaliakra, and in summer you will find them on the menu in many restaurants along this part of the coast. North of the town, near Kamen Bryag, the Yailata reserve has old cave dwellings cut into the rock and paths along the edge of the cliffs. Close to Kaliakra, the small cove of Bolata has one of the few sandy beaches on this rocky stretch.
